What is the world is a pareo?? And how do you pronounce it??
Of Tahitian origin and made famous by Paul
Gauguin's models, a pareo (also spelled pareu)
is a light-weight, filmy rectangle of colorful fabric used as a beach
cover-up,
as a fashion accessory or as a garment all by itself and, in
Polynesia,
is frequently worn by men as well as by women.
Also known as a sarong, longyi, pasin, lavalava (Samoa),
sulu (Fiji), kain (Indonesia) or pakome (Thailand)
Pareo is pronounced as par-E'-o with a long hard E or as pa-rA'-o with a long hard A.
|
Use it as a colorful ensemble accent, as a scarf or as a wall hanging. Drape it over a lamp or window for sensuous mood lighting.
